Three Colours of Clay are Used

Bog Oak design for Black Clay Lights

Near the entrance to our factory in Mullan Village is an old oak tree stump. The engravings on the tree's bark inspired the incorporation of strong textures in our ceramic designs, reflecting the roots of the craft. The colour of the bog oak tree led to the creation of our Black Clay finish, which blends dark and light shades like the crackled texture on the tree stump's surface.

The engraved markings on our ceramic designs resonate with the organic texture of this tree stump.

Red Earth Clay Lighting

Red brick is found in the old buildings in Mullan Village. Mullan's potter used the textures on the aged red bricks of the old Post Office to create the crackle effect in our ceramic designs. The Red Iron color finish reflects the character of Mullan Village and captures the beauty of the red row cottages that line the roadside in this rural community.

The colour blue has a special meaning in the ceramic craft and dates to 15th century China. Derived from the natural element cobalt, this ancient colouring technique inspired artists to include colour in their artwork.

Blue Colbalt Light Shade

Mullan have developed a unique ombre paintbrush method that creates a two-toned hue on the surface of the ceramic shades.

This artistic brushstroke façade resembles the rippled waters of the Blackwater River that runs alongside our factory in Mullan. This river once powered the old flax mill that Mullan now occupy.

Cobalt blue has particular significance in the history of ceramics and thus makes up the third colour finish in the Mullan Ceramics lighting collection.

"From the moment clay is taken from the bag it starts to dry and shrink. Timing is crucial. Some items can be made right away, others need to be left to dry until the clay is the perfect temperature. Trimming and cutting holes is better when the clay in harder, almost like leather.

Once the item is made, it is left to dry for one week. We use a traditional kiln oven to fire the products at over 1,000° degrees celsius. It is first fired, then more colour is added. At this stage the clay will glow red, yellow then white. The products are generally left for a day to cool and then they are complete".
